Optimizing External Data Strategic

The WIEUG Optimizing External Data Consumption Pillar

How do we bring ROI to our organizations through interoperability?  The main way is to strategically consume external data to close care gaps and improve HEDIS reporting.  This program looks at data in three ways:

  • Expanding data exchange options
  • Optimizing connections
  • Consuming the data in strategic ways

WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

The consumption of external data is becoming more important strategically for organizations to improve care coordination, meet HEDIS reporting requirements and close Health Maintenance Care gaps.

This complicated program is not just about getting data into the system but strategically using it across applications and workflows.

This program will include a series of presentations and discussions to explore expanding connections, optimizing exchanges and how to consume external data for an ROI.

WHAT GROUPS WILL MEET?

  • Data Exchange:
    • Expansion and Governance
  • Optimizing Connections:
    • Pop Health Queries
    • CE Setting Optimization (Interop core Team)
    • Billing related (PBX / Payer Platform)
  • Consuming the Data
    • Lab results / HT Genomics
    • Procedure / Imaging
    • Death Data Exchange
    • Standardization Efforts

WHAT IS THE TIMING/CADENCE?

  • The majority of these sessions follow a quarterly or monthly cadence and there is no end in sight for what we can discuss.
  • Most have already begun, but it’s not too late to join.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

The topics within this program tend to hit several internal teams – so look closely at the goals of each and plan accordingly.  The roles that have been the most typical attendees include:

  • CE Analysts
  • Happy Together Analysts
  • Population Health Managers
  • HIM Staff
  • Radiant Analysts

WHAT IS THE PLAN FOR THE PROGRAM?

This pillar is divided into three main types of programs:

  • Data Exchange Expansion
  • Optimizing Connections
  • Consuming the Data

The purpose of this program is to optimize the consumption of external data, enable richer charts through more connections and improve ROI through closing open Health Maintenance Care Gap closures and improving HEDIS reporting.

Optimizing Data Consumption Programs:

CE / HIE OPTIMIZATION

MAIN OBJECTIVES:

Join this group to discuss best practices and resolve challenges associated with Epic and external connections available for HIE (TEFCA, Aura, CERM, Carequality, HT Notes).  This group will also be the main team that discusses Population Health Queries; CE setting level optimization; escalates CE related challenges and defines solutions for interop issues; works with Epic to define ways to measure success; and, provides a venue of ongoing support for live connections

CADENCE:

Monthly

MAIN OBJECTIVES:

Join this deliverable development group to work together to utilize Epic functionality to increase the amount of living status exchanged and reconciled between trading partners.  This includes the implementation and management of the mortality workqueue as well as standardizing the documentation of the certificate of death such that when state laws / systems are set up to exchange death data, the region is set up to be successful in bidirectional exchange with vital records.

CADENCE:

Quarterly

DEATH DATA EXCHANGE

DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING

MAIN OBJECTIVES:

Join this group to be an early adopter of diagnostic imaging.

CADENCE:

Bi-monthly beginning in June 2026

MAIN OBJECTIVES:

Join this group to discuss ways we can work together to deepen and improve the amount of imaging related data exchanges and reconciled between Epic instances to support HM / richer charts. This team will work together to resolve mapping challenges for HT and IEX mapping and will also be the team to support early adoption of diagnostic imaging.

CADENCE:

Quarterly

IEX / HT IMAGING

ADVANCED LAB MAPPING AND PARTIAL PROFILE MAPPING

MAIN OBJECTIVES:

Join this group to discuss ways we can work together to deepen and improve the amount of lab related data exchanges and reconciled between Epic instances to support HM / richer charts. This team will work together to resolve mapping challenges for advanced lab mapping and will also be the team to support early adoption of partial profile mapping.

CADENCE:

Bi-monthly

MAIN OBJECTIVES:

Join this group to discuss ways we can work together to deepen and improve the amount of lab related data exchanges and reconciled between Epic instances to support HM / richer charts. This team will work together to support early adoption of profile mapping and genomics.

CADENCE:

Bi-monthly starting in May

LAB PROFILE MAPPING / GENOMICS

NEWBORN WORKFLOW OPTIMIZATION

MAIN OBJECTIVES:

Join this info sharing / networking group not only to ensure that newborn naming "standards" can be reviewed / updated based on regulations / best practices, but also to tackle challenges and nuances related to the newborn workflow.

CADENCE:

Quarterly

MAIN OBJECTIVES:

Join this team to share best practices and information about your set-up in order to offer options for your peers to optimize the exchange of billing / coding data across Epic instances (including with payers on EPP and with other health care organizations for shared services). This is one sub-group that will meet under the rev Cycle Optimization Program.

CADENCE:

Every 4 months
